शोध करने वाले छात्रों को अपने शोध कौशल को सुधारने और Ph.D और M.S.(अनुसंधान द्वारा) कार्यक्रमों के माध्यम से अग्रणी शोध अध्ययनों में सक्रिय

संस्थान में सोलह अकादमिक विभाग हैं और इंजीनियरिंग और शुद्ध विज्ञान के
विभिन्न विषयों में कुछ उन्नत अनुसंधान केंद्र हैं, जिसमें लगभग 100 प्रयोगशालाएं एक
अद्वितीय पैटर्न में आयोजित की जाती हैं।
मानव संसाधन विकास मंत्रालय द्वारा 2019 की एनआईआरएफ रैंकिंग में आईआईटी मद्रास लगातार चार वर्षों के लिए भारत में
शीर्ष क्रम का इंजीनियरिंग संस्थान होने के साथ-साथ समग्र श्रेणी में 'सर्वश्रेष्ठ शैक्षणिक संस्थान' रहा है। और आईआईटी मद्रास ने एनआईआरएफ 2021 में फिर से नंबर 1 रैंक हासिल किया।
